Woman driver in UAE owes nearly 1m dirhams in fines

A 28 year old Arab housewife has been arrested after allegedly racking up nearly 1 million dirhams in fines, website 7 Days in Dubai reported on Thursday.

The fines came to a total of 928,000 dirhams ($252,648) – the largest amount a woman driver has ever run up in the UAE, according to traffic prosecutors.

After a routine electronic check for drivers with expired licenses, police discovered the woman had accumulated 1,551 offences across the Emirates between 2009 and 2013.

Zayed Ahmed, chief of Ras Al Khaimah Traffic Prosecution, said: “The violations were discovered by coincidence when the traffic and patrols department was electronically searching for drivers with expired licenses.”

The offences were mainly for speeding and Salik (Dubai’s electronic toll system) fines.

Chief traffic prosecutor Ahmed added: “Violations totaling 360,000 dirhams ($98,010) were found to have been committed on Ras Al Khaimah roads alone.”

The driver had also not renewed her license since 2009.
The woman denies committing the offences, according to 7 Days in Dubai.
