A Russian policeman was killed in an Islamist stabbing attack in the Dagestan in Russia’s North Caucasus region Monday evening. A second policeman was wounded.
The policemen were attacked by two men who proceeded to stab them.
The attackers were shot dead by other police officers.
The ISIS terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the attack.
The stabbing was the second terrorist attack in Russia for which ISIS claimed responsibility in 10 days. ISIS also claimed responsibility for an axe attack in which seven people wounded in the Siberian city of Surgut on August 19.
Russian investigators have stated that they are investigating the attack as a criminal incident rather than a terrorist attack, despite the claims of responsibility by ISIS.
The TASS Russian news agency quoted unidentified sources as stating that two knives and other items with the ISIS logo were found among the attackers’ belongings.
