Chairman of Iran’s parliamentary committee on foreign affairs condemns Israel for attacking Iranian targets in Syria.
Alaeddin Boroujerdi, chairman of Iran’s parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, on Thursday condemned Israel for carrying out strikes in Syria against Iranian targets.
“Israel has entered a dangerous game,” Boroujerdi said during a visit to the Portuguese capital Lisbon, according to AFP.
The main purpose of these attacks, supported by the United States, is to divert public opinion from the behavior of the American president (and) his decision to leave the agreement,” he added, referring to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision this week to withdraw the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
Israel attacked Iranian targets in Syria overnight Wednesday after Iran’s Quds Force fired a barrage of 20 missiles towards Israeli posts in the Golan Heights.
Russia’s defense ministry said earlier on Thursday that Israel’s strikes on Syria saw 28 planes take part in raids with a total of around 60 missiles fired.
“28 Israeli F-15 and F-16 aircraft were used in the attack, which released around 60 air-to-ground missiles over various parts of Syria. Israel also fired more than 10 tactical ground-to-ground missiles,” the ministry said in a statement, quoted by the Interfax news agency.
At least 23 fighters, including five Syrian regime troops and 18 other allied forces, were killed in the attacks, the anti-Assad Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Thursday.
Boroujerdi has threatened Israel in the past. Earlier this month, he warned that his country will retaliate against Israeli “aggression” in Syria, follow air strikes attributed to Israel on military bases in the Syrian city of Hama where Iranian advisers were stationed.
“The aggression of the Zionist entity on our advisers in Syria guarantees us the right of response,” he said at the time.
