Egypt’s newly appointed general prosecutor resigns

Prosecutor-general judge Talaat AbdullahProsecutor-general judge Talaat AbdullahA group of judges and prosecution personnel staged a protest outside the office of the prosecutor-general judge Talaat Abdullah, Al Ahram Online reported.

The judges protested President Mursi’s decision to replace Mubarak-era prosecutor-general Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud with Abdullah.

Mursi took the decision in November immediately after he issued a presidential decree rendering his decisions irrevocable by any court.

Mursi had previously tried to dismiss Mahmoud, but he failed after his move was seen as illegal. Mahmoud became the general prosecutor in 2006 and was later appointed as the head of Egypt’s Court of Appeal.

Islamists and revolutionary powers had accused of him of being pro-Mubarak and of having intentionally failed to provide enough evidence to condemn ousted Mubarak and his sons in various charges.
