The famous conundrum “What came first? The chicken, or the egg?” has an analog in today’s world of anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism. What comes first? Anti-Zionism, or anti-Semitism? My answer is they are both the same thing, so I’ve coined the term anti-ZioSemites. They’re both Jew-haters. One just has to understand the context of the specific flavor of Jew-hater or anti-ZioSemite you’re dealing with at the specific moment.
Take for instance, your average American Jewish Jew-hater, for instance, Peter Beinart. He can’t overtly admit he hates Jews. In fact, to perpetrate his journalistic fraud on the Jewish people, he needs to project the image that he “loves the Jews.” So, what does he do? He morphs his hate into anti-right-wing-Zionism. Does the brutal reality that Israel is clinging to a small edge of the Mediterranean, and faces hundreds of millions of Muslims who want to eradicate it faze Beinart? No. Does the fact that he obsessively holds Israel to an imaginary standard that no other country could be held to and survive? No. Nothing will deter Beinart from propagating his Jew-hate screeds.
Or, how about the anti-Semitism of the 1930’s, and Adolph Hitler’s Nazi anti-Semitism? There wasn’t an Israel then, so Hitler couldn’t very well have hated Jews because of Israel. But for Hitler, his politically-correct and opportune anti-Semitism served the useful purpose of whipping Germany’s masses into a rabid fever. And as for anti-Zionism, even without the State, Hitler still doted on the Mufti Haj Amin al Husseini and together they promised each other that they would eradicate the Jews the first chance they got. So, Hitler “went both ways.”
Then, there’s Bill O’Reilly of FOX News. He doesn’t come out squarely against Israel because the FOX viewers are generally pro-Israel. And, he can’t just say he hates the Jews. So, what does he do? He writes a “historical” book titled “Who killed Jesus?” Now, in 2014, after even the Vatican has stopped saying it, guess on whom he pins the murder of Jesus? The butler? No. That’s right: the Jews. So, why do you think he writes a whole New York Times best-selling book blaming the Jews for killing Jesus? Is anyone reading his book going to say, “Wow, the Jews killed my savior Jesus. I just love those Jews!” Somehow I don’t think so. O’Reilly has planted fresh seeds of pure Jew-hate.
Oh, of course, then there’s the Jew-hating Issac Herzog, Israel’s Labor Party’s ‘fearless’ leader who is glued to the hip of Tzipi Livni. To Herzog, the world hates the Jews because of the settlers, and that Israel is “occupying the West Bank.” He should read what his father Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Chaim Herzog said in the UN 40 year ago: “The obstacle to peace lies in the encouragement given to Arab intransigence because of reasons of expediency. The obstacle to peace is a basic Arab attitude and until that attitude is changed, no real advance towards peace can be made. These are the obstacles to peace and any attempt to point a finger at Israel’s actions and to characterize them as obstacles to peace is untrue and baseless and is nothing but a grave misinterpretation of events in the Middle East.” Maybe Chaim’s son, Isaac, was, and still is, a little too young to have understood what his father actually said.
The fact remains that while the Arabs have “sat down” to talk to the Israelis, their mindset of annihilating Israel hasn’t changed one iota since the 1970’s when the Elder Herzog spoke his words.
Then, of course, there’s the Jew-haters of enlightenment Europe and present-day Europe. They hated the Jews when the Jews lived in shetyls, and “lived apart,” and then they also hated the Jews when they moved into the cities, and “competed for jobs.” And, it is this impossible contradiction that presents the greatest and most dangerous analog to today, and puts the European Jews in a quandary. The world hates the Jews when the Jews created the big shetyl of Israel, and the world hates the Jews when the Jews are living inside the European countries. So, where is it safe for Jews to live?
The answer is as long as the Jews attempt to rationalize that the Jew-haters hate the Jews because of some imagined reason, Jews will be in danger everywhere. Instead of worrying why people hate us, we need to make sure the Jew-haters can’t hurt us, and if they try to hurt us, they will be permanently physically disabled from hurting us or anybody else. In short, peace for the Jews will only come through the emotional and physical strength of the Jews, not from allowing our enemies a “West Bank Rocket State,” and a better and easier shot at annihilating us.
